Smells rotten?

Hello, I had made rosewater by just placing Springwater with about a cup of dried rose petals in a mason jar and sealed it before I read your how to. I did not boil the water it was just room temperature. It's been about a week the water is pink but it smells like it's rotting it does not smell like roses and it does not smell good. What can I do about this?

I don't know why it would smell rotten unless there was bacteria in the water or chemicals on the rose petals but I would start over and use purified water.
