Ringworm remedy- odd

If we got suspected ringworm my grandpa made an odd ointment. He rolled up a newspaper tightly into a tube. He wet all but the end he would light on fire. He put a glass jar over the top of the smokestack and caught the smoke residue. That residue was put on the ringworm. Modern treatments are vastly better, but this was an interesting one. He was from MN, of Belgian/Dutch descent.
