READING FOOD LABELS is the first step to understanding nutrition!
Interpreting Food Labels
When reading food labels remember that manufacturers are required to list all ingredients by weight. So the first item listed is the main and most 'food' that included in the product and the last is the least.
Read the entire ingredient list from top to bottom - out loud. If you have children, do this with them. You may find yourself a bit embarrassed that you can't even pronounce half of the stuff that you are ingesting. (In most cases, if you don't know what it is, your body doesn't either!) Do this at every meal and start becoming aware of exactly what you're putting in your body. Take a good look at those boxes of cereal that your kids insist on having every morning. What's the main ingredient?
No, I'm not going to ask you to cut anything out of your diet.... yet. Hopefully you will be willing to cut a few items from your list the next time you go grocery shopping and begin reading food labels on a regular basis. Becoming aware of what you're eating is a start to a holistic lifestyle. Remember that your body and mind rely on you to give it the proper nutrition so that they can operate efficiently.
If you're watching calories be sure to check the serving size on the package! You'll be surprised to find that the calorie count on a single serving on something like an ice cream bar is actually for only one half of the treat. Manufacturers are hoping you won't notice this!
Tips
- Check out the difference in the ingredients between plain potato chips and flavored!
- What does a can of soda consist of?
- And how about that all-in-one boxed casserole dish?
- How about that fake maple syrup? What is artifical flavor anyway?!
Nutrition plays a key role in your guide to happiness so Reading Labels is your Life Guide #3!
