Another great way to remove tarnish from silver ware, be it plate or sterling, is this.
Put a piece of aluminium foil, large enough to fit the bottom of your sink, in your sink. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of baking soda. Place silver in sink on top of the foil and cover with hot water. Allow to sit until water cools. Remove silver, rinse and dry. Most tarnish will be removed. If it isn't, start over with a new piece of foil.
There is a chemical reaction between the foil and soda that works amazingly.
