You probably have many herbs or spices in your pantry now that can be used for much more than food. Using herbs for home healing is just a matter of learning which one works. It's that simple! And empowering! There's an herb remedy for all minor ailments and many major ones also. Some of these herbs are what others might call weeds that can be found or grown in your own backyard.

I find it shocking that the majority of people scuff at the use of plants for medicine. Here's a few plant facts to ponder...

  • Plants were here on earth long before us.
  • Without plants there would be no life on our planet.
  • Most of the daily nutrients that keep our bodies healthy come from plants.
  • We share the same dna as plants, its just arranged in a different order. You could say our dna is plant based!
  • 80% of the worlds population uses herbs as their primary medicine.
  • Less than 100 years ago plants and herbs were the primary medicine here in the United States and each residence had their own home herbal medicine chest.
  • A large percentage of prescription drugs are derived from plants but since natural substances cannot be patented (hence no money to be made) pharmaceutical companies make synthetic copies of the plants healing properties.

Would you rather take a natural medicine or something made in a laboratory? Sure, prescription drugs have their place but we seem to be losing all the herbal wisdom that was passed down through centuries. Let's preserve and relearn these long forgotten remedies!

Herbs can be used as teas, tinctures, pills or capsules, compresses and poultices, essential oils or even for bathing and inhalations. Don't forget to incoporate healthy herbs into your cooking also!

Here are some brief examples of common herbs and just a few of their medicinal uses:

  • BASIL uses include treating insect bites, vomiting, parasites, acne and nervous conditions.
  • BAY uses include soothing sore joints (arthritis & rheumatism), fever, bruises and to promote menstruation.
  • CHAMOMILE uses for your home herbal kit include fever, stress and nerves, fatigue, swelling, sleep aid and digestive complaints.
  • COMFREY ROOT uses include menstrual problems, broken bones, bruises, sores and stomach ulcers.
  • GARLIC uses include coughs and colds, thrush, infections, high blood pressure, cholesterol and fighting the flu.
  • GINGER is used as home herbal medicine to treat indigestion and gas, circulation problems, arthritis, morning sickness and travel sickness.
  • LAVENDER is used to relieve stress, treat insomnia, promote relaxation, help headaches and fight infections.
  • ROSEMARY uses include circulatory disorders, stomach aches, fatigue, migraines and bruises.
  • SAGE is used for gas and diarrhea, sore throats and nervousness.
  • THYME uses include coughs and colds, flu, sore throat, headaches, rheumatism and even whooping cough.

These descriptions are very brief and hardly scratch the surface of just what medicinal herbs can do for your health. Learn more on the following pages and you'll be able to create your own home herbal medicine chest!
