How do you overcome the emotion sadness?

Get out in nature!

Each definition of joy will vary from person to person just as everyones tips on beating the blues will be different. I'm building this page with the sole intent of sharing ideas for overcoming feeling sadness.

All of us experience the emotion sadness once in a while and each of us has our own way of dealing with it. By sharing our ways of overcoming that meloncoly state of mind maybe we can make the world a little happier!


  • One of the first things I do when I'm feeling sad is to put on some of my favorite music! Singing out loud helps too though I only do this when I'm alone. Sure don't want someone else having pity for me when I'm wallowing in my own!

  • This very easy breathing exercise really just a simple form of meditation that you can do anytime, anywhere! It can amazingly help you relax and even lower blood pressure.
  • Next thing is to get up and get a large glass of water! Dehydration is a common cause of moodiness. Cheers!
  • Now get up and MOVE your bod! If you're at your desk get up and do some stretches. If you're at home get up and accomplish something. Take the dog for a walk, do the laundry, vacuum the house or just get up and dance to the music!
  • Get outside and breathe deeply. Take special note of the other forms of life around you. Plants, birds, animals, trees and even other people. Notice the breeze on your skin and the sun on your face. Absorb that universal energy! If it happens to be nighttime do some stargazing. Can you recognize any constellations?
  • Do something nice for someone else! It'll make you both feel good.
  • Call one of the positive people in your life. Someone who almost always makes you laugh. Plan a fun day together! Avoid the people that will simply commiserate with you. Negativity will only create more of the same.
  • Pamper your pets. Pet them, brush them, love them. Their soft fur and unconditional love always makes me feel better.
  • Tell yourself "my negative thoughts mean nothing"! Realize that focusing on sad and negative emotions will only draw more of the same into your life. Replace these thoughts with positive affirmations. Learn more about affirmations here.
  • If you're experiencing feeling sadness far more than you should it would do you good to start taking 5000 units of vitamin d a day! Low levels of vitamin d and depression are very closely linked.
  • Send love to your loved ones. You don't have to even move your body just send your love up into the universe. Love is contagious, you know!
