The old baking soda remedies for smelly refrigerators or a stinky drain are well known but there are so many other uses for sodium bicarbonate! It's not only good for cooking but as an environmentally friendly household cleaner, ant repellent, natural beauty and health aid and a natural deodorizer.
HOUSEHOLD BAKING SODA USES
Run 1/4 cup dissolved in water through your coffee pot to clean and freshen then follow with a clean water cycle.
Run 1/2 cup through your dishwasher to clean stains and buildup.
Remove stains and clean your sinks, stove, oven, toilets and such by sprinkling baking soda on and wiping with a damp sponge. For tough stains make a paste with bs & water, then scrub.
Dump 1/3 cup baking soda down a drain or garbage disposal followed by hot water to clean & freshen. For a slow drain or clog try following the bs with vinegar, let it finish fizzing and follow with hot water.
Keep a box near the stove to put out grease or electrical fires.
A couple sprinkles in your garbage can will help keep odors down.
Ants will not cross a 2 inch border of baking soda. Keep them out!
USE BAKING SODA FOR LAUNDRY
Using 1/2 cup in the wash cycle is a great detergent booster!
Using 1/2 cup in the final rinse cycle deodorizes and softens clothes. Great for baby clothes!
BAKING SODA REMEDIES FOR BEAUTY
Put a quarter size amount of shampoo in your hand and add a good sized pinch of baking soda. Shampoo and rinse as usual. Your hair will be unbelievably soft!
Use to brush your teeth. A natural tooth whitener!
Soak your feet in a basin of water with 3 tablespoons baking soda right before your self pedicure!
Put 1 teaspoon bs in a glass of water and use as a mouth rinse for a clean mouth and fresh breath.
Use 1/4 cup in your bathwater! Great for itchy skin or allergic rashes.
After washing your face (with your face & hands still damp) sprinkle a LITTLE on your hands and use as a facial scrub.
BAKING SODA REMEDIES FOR HEALTH
Baking Soda Cure for Indigestion - Mix 1/2 teaspoon in a glass of water and drink. Amazing! (If you have a medical condition or are on a salt restricted diet check with your doctor first)
USE BAKING SODA AS A REMEDY FOR PETS
Use as a dry shampoo on your pooch if he's a little smelly. Simply sprinkle on coat and brush through. Safe and non-toxic for pets!
Sprinkle on pet bedding and let sit for 15-20 minutes then vacuum to deodorize.
Sprinkle some in the litter box as an added deodorizer.
For dogs afraid of thunderstorms you can try sprinkling baking soda along their spine right up to their head down to their tail. It's believed that some dogs are more sensitive to the static energy in the air during storms and baking soda is known to reduce static thus reducing their fear.
GARDEN
Weed killer - Sprinkle on the leaves of any plant you need to get rid of and let the sun bake it in.
All these uses for baking soda can be very inexpensive when you buy in bulk. 12 pound bags are usually available at any warehouse type store!
