Avoid Monsanto Seeds

by HFHR

When we think of Monsanto we typically think of commodity crops like corn, soybeans and wheat but did you know Monsanto has bought out many small seed companies that provide seeds for your garden?

One of the largest is seed companies bought by Monsanto is Seminis which provide seeds for many of our favorite garden seed catalogs such as Burpee, Johnny Selected Seeds, Park Seeds and more. I don't know about you but I don't want to give Monsanto even one penny of my hard earned money!

Things you can do to avoid Monsanto seeds:

1. Call your favorite seed company and find out if they purchase Monsanto owned seeds.

2. Check out the Seminis website to find out what varieties they carry so you can avoid them.

3. Look for companies that have taken the Safe Seed Pledge. Many seed companies that signed the Safe Seed Initiative stating they will "not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants", but keep in mind the pledge is simply based on a promise and is not regulated in any way."

4. They only sure-fire way to avoid Monsanto seeds is to buy Certified Organic Seeds. You're also fairly safe in buying heirloom varieties. Seed Savers Exchange, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, and Landreth's all specialize in heirlooms.
